How it works, and why these improvements were needed

Studio Sound 4.0 (Javelin) is generative speech enhancement.

It doesn’t transcribe your words, rather re-voices them in 3 steps. First, it figures out what phonemes you are saying.

Next, it uses how you sounded a moment ago to predict your original voice. So, your voice stays consistent instead of drifting.

Then it fixes small artifacts like smearing, false high harmonics, and merged words.

Trained with extreme cases for echo removal. With 3D simulator.

  • Javelin removes tricky echo and reverb.
  • In usual situation, they are hard to fix. As echo depends more on the room, where the speaker stands, and where the mic or camera is. Real recordings of every combination don’t exist, so we built our own 3D acoustic simulator.
  • The simulator traces how the sound spreads and bounces around the room, and calculates exactly what reaches the mic.
  • We pair each simulated recording with its clean version, and the model learns to figure out the clean voice from the echoey one.
  • That gives us realistic “bad room” audio for edge cases. And hence, better trained model to fix deep-cave echoey audio.

No. There is no speech-to-text or text-to-speech step. Javelin encodes the phonetic and acoustic information of your speech and generates clean audio from it, similar to how image generators work. That is why it handles accents and works in 20+ languages.

It aims to sound like you, recorded in a studio. Javelin uses your original recording as reference throughout, and when a moment is unclear it draws on how you sounded a second earlier, so your voice stays consistent. The exact tone can vary slightly with the source audio.

Yes. Javelin was fine-tuned on 3D acoustic simulations of rooms, so it learns to predict the clean voice from an echoey one. Halls, classrooms and bare rooms come out sounding close to the mic.

When a model isn’t sure what was said, it can produce smearing, fake high-frequency tones or merged syllables that sound warbly or sung. Javelin’s larger generator makes this rarer and its refinement stage fixes the small ones. On very damaged audio, any generative tool, ours included, can still garble a syllable or skip a word.

There’s no need. With Studio Sound on, the noise remover is ignored, because Studio Sound removes noise itself. Adding breath or noise removal on top can bring back crackle.
